How do you help a person who will not help himself. Last night I was approached by a gentleman as I was leaving Hon's restaurant in China town. He was a homeless man with a sad, resigned look on his face. He said that he wanted to buy some rice and the restaurant would not sell it to him. He stood with a slouch, no socks on his feet which were discolored --either from bruises or malnutrition,, i don't know which. He said he was cold and hungry.
The spirit inside of me wanted to help this man. If you saw him, you would want to help him too. But how? When I offered to go buy him some rice he said, "Can't you just give me a couple of bucks?" Eventually I gave in and just gave him the two dollars and change that I had received as change for my meal.
10 minutes later, while on my way to Street Church, I saw this same man buying drugs.
How do you help a person who will not help himself. This man needs love -- he needs Jesus, but it seems that he has dug himself a hole so deep that he can not climb out and no person can climb down to get him -- and my two dollars intended to help him were like tossiing him down a hand-shovel expecting him to dig his way out of the hole.
Jesus help him..
